Sgt. York Stamp Dedication

Col. Jerry McFarland, President of the Sgt. York Foundation.

Pall Mall, Tennesse near Jamestown was the site of an event of historical significance Saturday, May 6th, where ceremonies were held honoring Tennessee's native son and legendary World War I hero, Sgt. Alvin C. York. The celebration got underway at 1PM at recently renovated York Country Store and Wolf River Post Office. The occasion marks the "First Day of Issue in Pall Mall" of the Sgt. Alvin C. York postage stamp. The commemorative stamp was released at the Pentagon May 3rd by the U.S. Postal Service.

The legendary Tennessean from Fentress County, hailed as this nation's greatest military hero of the 20th century, is one of four distinguished soldiers from World Wars I and II being thus honored. Others include Gen. John Hines, 2nd Lt. Audie Murphy, and Gen. Omar Bradley.

In addition to the official Pall Mall stamp release, the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation will introduce four commemorative, limited edition cachet envelopes depicting York's life. Highlighting the occasion was the presence of 80 year old Pall Post Mistress Elaine Williams who personally hand cancelled stamped envelopes.
